| Interested in how spices and herbs contributed to the medical discoveries? Join us on a study abroad experience to Morocco. The College of Science is hosting Science and Spices of Morocco, spring break 2023 from March 11 – 19, 2023. This experience will give students an overview and background on the geography, culture, and the impact of spice on the history of Morocco. This course will explore principle geographic features, customs, traditions, and much more. This study abroad experience is a real-world learning laboratory!

Tropical Ecology and Conservation |
|

The CIEE Monteverde Tropical Ecology + Conservation program is designed for students with biology-related majors who have completed at least one year of introductory biology and one elective in ecology and seek intensive, sophisticated tropical field and course work in Costa Rica from both theoretical and taxonomic perspectives. Costa Rica, a country committed to preserving natural parks and biological reserves, is an excellent location in which to pursue tropical biology studies. As part of a land-bridge between North and South America, the geographical and climate conditions allow flora and fauna of both continents to coexist, creating uniquely diverse ecosystems. Monteverde is a small community of 4,000 that accommodates up to 200,000 tourists each year. Its forest is located in the largest private reserve in Central America and reflects a long heritage of grassroots conservation. Monteverde’s Cloud Forest has been studied for over 25 years by both visiting and Costa Rican biologists. This widens the research opportunities available and acquaints students with practical biological problems associated with agricultural development, eco-tourism, and grassroots conservation efforts in developing countries.

- It is time to update your Learning Beyond the Classroom portfolio and score some points. You have done lots of experiential learning, so take some time and submit reports on activities already completed.
- May 2023 graduates: remember that you must have completed the program by the end of January 2023 in order to earn the LBC certificate.
- If you have submitted a report, check and see if you have been asked to supply more information. If you find that you have received “0” points on a report, click on your score and you will see what questions you have been asked to answer. Resubmit your report with the required information so that your LBC points can be updated.
- Not enrolled in Learning Beyond the Classroom (LBC)? Enroll today! Sign up Here.

| For our monthly event, undergraduate WISP partnered with Graduate WISP to explore the Technology of Tomorrow…Today. We were able to gain a general understanding of the Internet Of Things (IOT) and its connection to our daily lives in SMART devices, learn about the pros and cons of Big Data as well as how to maintain safety online. An attendee commented that “technology is an incredible tool, but there are resounding dangers associated with modern advances.” Approximately half of our combined WISP cohorts are seen in this photo wearing this year’s WISP t-shirts sponsored by alumna, Ms Eileen Clark. |

The reception takes place from 4:30-6 p.m. in the North Ballroom of the Purdue Memorial Union. Proud to be First! will help build community among first-generation students, as well as staff, faculty, alumni, and advocates. The public is welcome to stop by for refreshments and giveaways. Advocacy and mentorship are critical soft skills, and not talked about enough! To be successful, one needs not only to possess skills like these but also to be actively looking for them in one's workplace. It’s great if you and your organization have ‘mission alignment’ but you may still need to negotiate and advocate, and deal with push back and consequences. Our panelists, Renee A. Thomas and Stephanie Masta, have valuable insights to share about workplace cultures, advocating for oneself and/or for others, and seeking and/or offering mentorship. The Zoom conversation will not be recorded. *Though developed for #graduate students at Purdue University, everyone is welcome to attend!*

The Indiana University Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) is a fully funded graduate program for students that integrates top-notch clinical medical training with cutting-edge research. Students are able to choose from eight PhD programs, including Biomedical Engineering in a joint program with the Purdue School of Engineering.
For current undergraduates who are interested in exploring the MD/PhD path as a physician-scientist/physician-engineer, we have a Medical Science Training Program summer research opportunity. It is an intensive summer research experience for highly motivated students. We encourage Purdue University undergraduates to apply.

Bernice Wahler Landscapes is a boutique design practice located in the seaside village of Sandwich, MA. Our work is informed by the landscapes that surround us. With a deep appreciation for contextual design and the desire to create, we have been fortunate enough to design award winning landscapes throughout New England and have some fun along the way.
We are seeking an intern to entry level designer to join our team. The ideal team member’s relevant professional experience should include:
0-3 years of experience in the field of landscape design
Understanding of earth sculpting and grading
Excellent written/verbal communication skills
Excellent time-management and organizational skills
Comfort level and confidence to communicate with clients and collaborators.
We are a dog-loving, Mac based office of 4 designers using Auto cad, Sketch-up, Adobe Suite, and soft leaded pencils.

Summer Internship at the University of Missouri Department of Psychological Sciences |
|

The University of
Missouri has an
exciting opportunity for undergraduates interested in summer research
experiences. Undergraduate students are
invited to apply for an internship with our program: MU Alcohol Research
Training Summer School (MU-ARTSS). MU-ARTSS provides an
intensive week-long introduction to alcohol research, coupled with an 8-week
paid internship ($3,800 stipend plus room and board) for each student to be
mentored by alcohol researchers in the Department of Psychological Sciences and
Department of Psychiatry. The program aims to increase the pipeline of
scientists among minority and non minority undergraduates who are interested in
pursuing careers in alcohol research and is supported by an institutional
training grant through the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
(NIAAA).
The week-long program of
structured learning experiences will be conducted at the University of Missouri
in Columbia from June 1-June 7, 2023. At the conclusion of the course, MU-ARTSS
students will be placed in internships from June 8-July 28, 2023 in the
laboratories of researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Depending
upon students' interests, students will be placed in laboratories that focus on
one or more of the following areas: (1) human genetics, (2) behavioral pharmacology,
(3) psychiatric epidemiology, (4) neuroimaging, and (4) statistical modeling.
In these internships, students will work alongside other interns, graduate
students, postdocs and faculty members to gain experience in contemporary
alcohol research that will provide valuable experiences in preparation for
graduate study.
